The Gauger's Share

Named for Scotland's historic Excise Officers — the Crown's Gaugers who tallied every cask.

A discovery on a cold Orkney morning.

It began, as most good things do, with a dram shared in poor weather. On a series of visits to distilleries across Orkney and the Northern Isles, we encountered casks that stopped us still — whiskies of such singular character that opening a single bottle felt insufficient. They deserved to be experienced as a sequence. A conversation between casks.

The idea for Gauger's Share crystallised over a kitchen table in Kirkwall in late 2023. Rather than offer individual bottles, we would curate three-cask flights — each bottle chosen to represent a distinct moment: the opening, the development, the lasting impression. We launched our inaugural release in March 2024.

We operate as a small, independent team. We travel to the distilleries. We nose and taste each cask ourselves. We bottle without compromise — no chill filtration, no colouring, no dilution from cask strength. What you receive is precisely what was in the cask.

Three principles. No exceptions.

No Compromise

We never dilute to a target ABV and we never blend for consistency. Every bottle in a flight comes from a single cask, at the strength nature and time produced. The cask is the authority — not a specification sheet.

No Chill Filtration

Chill filtration removes the fatty acids and esters that carry flavour and texture. We never use it. You may see a natural haze when water is added or temperatures drop — that is a sign of an uncompromised whisky.

Cask Strength

Every whisky we bottle is drawn directly from cask at its natural strength. You are in control — add water drop by drop and discover how the spirit opens. It is your dram, tuned to your palate.

Rigour at every step.

01

Selection

We visit distilleries directly — walking the warehouses, examining cask records, tasting from the wood. We are looking for whiskies that tell an interesting story at the right moment in their maturation. Most casks we taste are not selected.

02

Assessment

Selected casks are assessed in detail: ABV measured precisely, tasting notes developed across multiple sessions at different dilutions and temperatures. We identify where each whisky sits in the flight structure — opening, development, or finish.

03

Bottling

Each cask is bottled at its natural cask strength, without chill filtration or added colouring. Bottles are hand-numbered from the outturn. We work with a small specialist bottler in Scotland to ensure every stage meets our standards.

04

Curation

The three bottles are curated into a flight pack with detailed tasting notes, distillery provenance, and QR codes linking to full cask histories. The flight arrives as a complete experience — ready to share or savour alone.
